Kids for Kids recently received a mailing regarding A SURVEY FOR A PERFORMING ARTS HIGH SCHOOL IN SUFFOLK COUNTY. We were asked to pass the word along.
please
note: no child should reply to this survey without getting their
parents permission first!
How many of you young people in Suffolk County would love to study at
a Long Island High School of the Performing Arts in Suffolk County? Presently, there are two High Schools for the Performing Arts in
Manhattan and Syosset. The Long Island High School for the Performing
Arts in Syosset is a BOCES program that is available for both Suffolk
and Nassau County residents. Unfortunately most Suffolk County School
Districts deny their high school students this opportunity due to
budgetary issues. I am conducting a survey asking any Suffolk County students grades 9
through 12 who would like a concentrated program in the arts – musical
theatre, technical aspects of theatre, dance, theatre, music, art, etc.
BOCES programs are eligible for consideration in New York State when
at least three or more school districts show an interest in the program.
I have been asked to generate a list to show such a need in Suffolk
County. As a participant in many community theatres on Long Island and a
public school music teacher, I know that there are a significant number
of teens who would benefit from such a unique program. Some people are
not even aware that such a school exists on Long Island as it is not
promoted in our school districts. A number of you have tried to get into
the Syosset BOCES program and have been denied by your individual school
districts. The purpose of this survey is to gather specific information to show
that there is an interest in Suffolk County for students to attend such
a school.

Please make sure your parents are aware and
agree with you answering this survey. I realize that this is the first step in pursing a well over-due and
needed school like this in Suffolk County. Your input is greatly
appreciated and necessary in order to take this to the next level. Carmela Attridge
